Ingredient Notes

Ingredients needed for egg roll in a bowl recipe.
  • Pork sausage – Ground pork is high in fat and cooks quickly, making it ideal for this Egg Roll Bowl recipe. Make sure to use mild sausage here.
  • Cabbage – This gets shredded and cooked with the ground pork, mimicking the consistency of traditional egg roll filling perfectly. A combination of green and red cabbage provides nutrition and a pop of color.
  • Carrots- Adds texture, flavor, and color!
  • Ginger – Minced ginger is essential for giving the bowls a bit of spice and a more authentic “restaurant quality” taste. Ginger paste works as a substitute if you can’t find fresh ginger root.
  • Green onions – We add these just before serving to give the egg roll bowls a little bite and a pop of color.
  • Sesame oil – This mildly nutty oil helps tie together the various flavors in this egg roll bowl recipe. You add it at the end of cooking, along with the green onions.

Tips and Tricks

  • Substitutions: Swap the cabbage for coleslaw mix if desired. Ground beef can be substituted for the pork in this recipe too. Just make sure to use beef with a high fat content for best results.
  • Spicy Egg Roll Bowls: Add a bit of sugar free chili garlic sauce (or no-sugar hot mustard) to your egg roll bowl if you’d like some heat!
  • Gluten free: To make this recipe gluten free, make sure to use a certified gluten free soy sauce (or tamari seasoning.)

Recipe FAQs

Does an Egg Roll Bowl have egg in it?

No, an Egg Roll Bowl doesn’t typically contain eggs. Egg Rolls get their name from the wrapper used in most Asian egg roll recipes, which contains eggs as well as flour. We leave the wrapper out here so it’s a no flour, no egg, egg roll recipe!

Can I use another ground meat?

Ground pork–with its high fat content–is our favorite ground meat for making egg roll bowls. If needed, you can substitute high fat ground beef. I don’t recommend lower fat meats like ground chicken or turkey. Much of the flavor in these bowls comes from the fatty juices released by the pork as it cooks. You just won’t get the same results from a lean meat.

Is this Egg Roll Bowl keto?

Yes, this meal is considered keto because it is low in net carbs and high in protein. We think this easy skillet dinner is delicious whether or not you eat a keto diet! You won’t even miss the egg roll wrapper.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Egg Roll in a Bowl is best made just before serving. Have all your ingredients ready to go and it only takes about 15 minutes to cook making it a great choice for busy nights.
